Glion Dolly
Now, this one was made with city commuters in mind. It is absolutely perfect for taking it on public transport with you, as it features a unique luggage-like dolly, which no other scooter on the market has. This makes commuting with Glion Dolly in the busy rush hour a dream. We tested it on a busy London underground and going up and down escalators has never been easier as the scooter stands up on its own.
The folding mechanism is straightforward. In order to use the luggage-like handle, all you have to do is pick up the scooter on the front end, and press and pull-out the handle, just like you would on any suitcase. The handlebar has 3 adjustable lock-in positions to accommodate different rider height. Another unique feature are the wide (22 inches across) and folding handlebars, which make turning while riding easier.
Glion Dolly has 8-inch honeycomb never-flat tires which do not make for the most comfortable ride out there as you are likely to really feel every bump and crack in the road. The front wheel shock-absorber does not make for a great suspension at all and riding the scooter on anything other than smooth surfaces can become annoying and uncomfortable over an extended period of time.
The scooter has two braking systems – an electric brake and a rear fender stop brake, which gives a much shorter stopping distance. The charging port is in a really good place, where dirt won’t get to it. The battery charges in about 3.5 hours allowing the scooter to perform at it’s stated 15 mile range.
This scooter is rear-wheel drive, as opposed to most other electric scooters out there. I have found this to be a little problematic, because when the motor engages it sends the back of the scooter forward, which in turn lifts up the front end. This could potentially be dangerous as it could smash the front end of the scooter accidentally into a passerby. However, once you are aware of this, it does not present itself as a major issue.
Highlights & Why We Like it
If you’re looking for a fun and speedy scooter to race around on, this is definitely not the scooter for you. However, with Glion Dolly you get what you pay for – a commuter friendly scooter with a medium range. In addition, it retails at a very good price for a scooter that will get you around the city stress-free. If you’re commuting every day, perhaps driving to a car park and then you have a lengthy walk to the train station, this little electric scooter is an absolute gem, and the fold-up dolly feature is an absolute winner!
GOTRAX GXL
When Gotrax GXL first hit the market it was an instant hit. The scooter has a lovely clean design, without wires coming out of everywhere, which really makes it look like a high-end product. Gotrax GXL has 8.5” air filled tires which act as a suspension and will give you a really comfortable ride on a variety of terrains – we tested it on grass and gravel roads and it still made for a pleasant ride.
The scooter has a dual braking system, which is quite rare bearing in mind it’s fairly low price tag. It has rear disc brakes, controlled by a foot pedal and an electric regenerative anti-lock brake system which makes for very responsive braking. It has a charging time of about 4 hours, which is more or less an average for the majority of electric scooters out there.
The scooter also has a headlight, however the light itself isn’t that bright, it’s more or less there just to warn oncoming traffic if you’re in the road, or pedestrians if you’re on the sidewalk/pavement. This model does not have a brake light, but there are 3 reflector strips (on either side of the rear wheel and the back). This model also features a slick looking speedometer with a LED display, which will allow you to view your current speed, remaining battery life and change speed settings. It also has a really useful Cruise Control option – you just hold the accelerator down for 10 seconds and it will automatically kick-in, maintaining the scooter’s current speed. I found this to be a really convenient feature while riding for extended periods of time.
Gotrax GXL has a really quick and easy folding mechanism – you just need to pull a leaver which folds down the handlebars and then it locks into place on top of the rear wheel. It was made with a commuter in mind, and to be fair, it does have a really portable design with quite manageable dimensions when folded (15” x 44” x 6”). However, at 12 kg/27 lbs it’s a bit too heavy to carry around for too long, especially on crowded public transport. Another thing you may want to consider is that the manufacturer’s guidelines state that the scooter can support a maximum rider weight of 220 lbs, which is just under 100 kg, so it’s worth keeping this in mind.
Highlights & Why We Like it
Gotrax GXL is currently one of the most affordable electric scooters on the market which features a similar design and functions such as Xiaomi M365 Mijia and Pro, Ninebot ES4 and Widewheel, all of which retail for a much higher price. Regardless of what you decide to use the scooter for, be it for commuting to work in the city, or for fun days out with the family, Gotrax GXL is an absolute winner and I would recommend it if you are looking for a really affordable electric scooter.
Hiboy MAX Electric Scooter
Hiboy are one of the first well-known brands to have a scooter with honeycomb tires as standard. The number one advantage of having solid tires is that you cannot get a flat. On models such as the Hiboy MAX where honeycomb tires are used instead of air-filled ones, the scooter usually compromises the comfort, as hard tires mean bigger impact whilst riding. However, the front suspension on the Hiboy MAX more than makes up for this and it allows for almost as comfortable a ride as on a scooter with air-filled tires, with the added bonus of not having to worry about getting a flat. A suspension system is rarely seen on models within this price range and Hiboy have really done a great job at making up for the absence of pneumatic tires.
Another great feature is the LCD display which allows you to keep a close eye on essential stats, such as current speed, remaining battery life, what mode you’re using and Bluetooth connectivity. The absolute star feature of this scooter is the fact that it has 3 different modes: Beginner, Normal and Sport. The first one limits your speed to a maximum of 9.3 mph, while at the same time it lowers acceleration. Normal Mode will allow you to travel with a maximum speed of 13.6 mph, while Sport Mode will leave the speed completely uncapped at its maximum potential of 18.6 mph. These are really great as sometimes you might find yourself in areas where there is a lot of speeding traffic, or walkways with a lot of pedestrians, so having the option to cap your speed or increase it really makes a difference. This is also a great feature for a family of users, who might be using the same scooter, but are of different age and skill levels.
The scooter comes with a downloadable app, which is great and allows you to change various settings, such as what speed mode the scooter automatically starts in, and you can also set up Cruise Control which always comes in handy during those extended riding times. Hiboy MAX has dual headlights, which gives it a much wider range of visibility at night. This made me feel so much safer during my evening commute home from work. For added safety there is a rear fender light, which is also a functioning brake light. Better yet, the scooter also has sidelights on either side of the foot pad. These greatly improve your visibility to vehicles and pedestrians while riding at nighttime.
Hiboy MAX has a combination brake, like most scooters on the market. One uses the motor’s own electric brake and the other is a rear-mounted disc brake. These two have enough braking power between them to stop the scooter within a couple of meters, even when going at maximum speed. The electric brake also has a regenerative function, which allows for the battery to recharge whilst using the brakes.
The folding mechanism is unique in its design – with a simple press of your foot on the latch, the scooter conveniently folds down into a simple to carry position. However, due to its 15.5 kg/ 34 lbs weight, it does not make for the easiest scooter to carry around, especially during peak times on public transport.
Highlights & Why We Like it
What got us to fall in love with this scooter is the ease with which it folds, its 3 different speed modes and, the absolute winner in my opinion – the dual headlights and the sidelights on either side of the foot pad. I tend to use the scooter late at night regularly when coming back from work, and I’ve never felt so safe as on this scooter.
Hiboy MAX is an absolute joy to ride! This is a high quality scooter with a really good price tag attached to it. The increased performance, unique design and folding mechanism make it a great product, and I can honestly say it’s well worth the money.
MegaWheels S5
MegaWheels S5 is probably one of the best cheap electric scooters on the market in 2020. It’s really well-built and fairly light. The scooter has 2 gears: the first one limits your speed to a maximum of 9 mph, and the second allows you to travel up to the maximum speed of 14.3 mph. You can switch between these two gears easily by pressing the button conveniently located in the middle of the handlebar.
As an added bonus, the scooter has a maximum supported rider weight of 256 lbs/120 kg, which is above the average compared to other scooters on the market that are of similar price. We tested it with a 238 lbs/108 kg rider and the S5 handled it perfectly. On the other hand, it has a maximum range of 12.5 miles, which in comparison to other electric scooters on the market is quite low. However, it is much cheaper than the competing brands and models.
The scooter also has an energy recovery system, like most other electric scooters do – whenever you use the brakes some of the energy will be restored back to the battery. In addition, the battery only takes 3 hours to charge from 0-100% and this is on average a lot faster than its counterparts. The one downside is that there is no clear information on battery protection and safety and MegaWheels definitely need to address this issue and provide easy to reach information to customers.
The S5 really stands out with its clever and unique design – the foot platform has a high clearance from the ground and it’s super thin. This is because, unusually, the battery is not located in the platform, but in the main bar of the scooter. Which is why the bar is square, and while it may not look as appealing as a standard round one, we really love this new battery placement.
The scooter features a small LED screen in the middle of the handlebar, which displays the remaining battery life, and that’s about it. It does not show you current speed, mileage or time/distance, but this really isn’t a big deal and it’s not what I would consider an essential for an electric scooter. It also does not have an app to connect to, which was probably done in order to provide good quality and performance for a very competitive price. In MegaWheels’ case, this was achieved by not including things that are not crucial, such as an app, a cruise control option and a more advanced LED display.
The S5 features 8.5” air-filled tires which provide greater grip and shock absorption when going through uneven terrain. This is an urban electric scooter designed to ride on pavements and roads, and the pneumatic tires really help absorb small bumps in the road. We also tested it on grass, and it performed just fine. However, when tested on gravel roads with rocky surfaces, it didn’t make for pleasant ride and we wouldn’t recommend it.
The folding mechanism is really easy to use, simply unlock the front clamp on the bar and fold it to the rear fender, where it locks in place. It really takes just a few seconds before the scooter is folded and ready to carry. At 27 lbs/12 kg, it’s not too heavy, but it’s a little too bulky to handle on a busy train or bus. The scooter does not have an adjustable handlebar for different heights, however it really doesn’t need one, as it’s designed for adults, not for children.
Highlights & Why We Like it
MegaWheels S5 is a good quality scooter with a beautiful design and the build feels very solid when riding. It is definitely aimed at the city commuter with its light frame and easy folding system. The number one thing that makes us absolutely love this scooter, is the unusual placing of the battery. The majority of scooters have their heavy, bulky batteries located under the foot platform. MegaWheels conveniently placed it at the bottom of its square shaped main bar, which did not compromise the balance of the scooter in any way, and it gave it an overall neat and minimalist look which is very appealing – with a lovely thin foot platform, which means not having to worry about the battery getting damaged at the bottom from puddles and accidental scrapes on high pavements. I would definitely recommend the S5 if you’re after a cheap, commuter friendly, sleek looking electric scooter for daily use.
NANROBOT D4+
The D4+ is one of the most powerful electric scooters out there. The price is somewhat higher than your regular scooter, but this is not your ordinary e-scooter. When it comes to performance, it’s one of the best out there, with a jaw-dropping top speed of 34-40 mph, and a maximum range of 34-40 miles. In addition, the D4+ can handle an incline of up to 45 degrees. We tested it uphill and it works like a dream.
Nanrobot D4+ has 10” tires, with a front suspension system that uses 4 springs. The rear wheel has a suspension which makes for a great shock absorber over uneven terrain and bumps in the road. The chunky air-filled tires perform amazingly on rough surfaces. The tires really are something else, I have never experienced such comfort while riding a scooter. We tested it on gravel roads, grass and even on stairs, and the suspension is mind-blowing.
The scooter is fitted with a controller that can be customized in 10 different ways. It allows you to fine-tune settings such as speed measurement unit (km/h or mph), cruise speed, and the amount of power delivered by the motors. There are two ride modes: Eco and Turbo; and you can also select between having both motors switched on, or just one. Yep, you read that right, this beauty has two motors, located in the wheels, and it’s fitted with two charging ports, so you can connect it to two chargers, essentially cutting down the time it takes to charge in half.
The scooter has perforated disc brakes and has a high strength aluminum alloy frame, which allows it to support a rider weight of up to 330 lbs/150 kg. This is far greater than any other scooter on the market that we’ve come across.
Unusually, the D4+ has a key that you need in order to use the scooter, and without it, the scooter won’t start. The scooter is also fitted with LED lights for night riding, and these are very powerful and provide amazing visibility on the road, which will make you feel safe if riding at nighttime.
The Nanrobot D4+ also has a folding mechanism, which means you can fold it down and take it with you on the bus/train. The handlebars are also folding, which makes it a little more manageable. However, the scooter is a lot heavier than other e-scooters on the market, weighing at just under 60 lbs (27 kg), which is really not easy to manage around public transport. So, I would really not recommend getting this scooter if you plan to use it for a daily commute to work, where part of your journey involves you having to carry it on the subway/underground with you. The scooter can also be fitted with a seat for those longer journeys, however it is sold separately.
Highlights & Why We Like it
Nanrobot D4+ is a beautifully made scooter, and if you are willing to invest a bit more, you will have an amazing riding experience every time you step on this scooter. This is really more of a fun-days out scooter, that you might take with you when exploring and hiking or for days out with your family. As previously mentioned, I really wouldn’t recommend this scooter for commuting in the city due to its weight and power/speed. However, it is compact enough to fold up, put in your car booth and go somewhere where you can have an adventurous ride on different terrains.
Ninebot Segway ES4
The ES4 is a powerful electric scooter, the motor has a peak power of 800 Watts, which really makes it one of the more impressive models out there. The ES4 is an upgraded version of Segway’s ES2 and ES3 models, which means it can reach an impressive speed of up to 19 mph. The scooter has two ride modes, a standard one and a sports mode. It can support a rider weight of up to 220 lbs, which is just under a 100 kg and comes as standard for most scooters out there. While the scooter is relatively expensive, retailing at around $800, you really are paying for the range superiority of this model compared to other e-scooters on the market.
Ninebot ES4 features an LED screen, which allows you to access important information and statistics, such as your current speed, riding mode and remaining battery life. You can also customize the color of your rear and sidelights, which makes for a really cool feature. The scooter also has an anti-theft function (alarm), which comes in handy if you want to leave your scooter unattended outside a shop or gym. There is also a Cruise Control option which will limit your speed to 12 mph. This is a great way to save your battery life, while also at the same time not really compromising the speed.
The scooter features two batteries – an internal and external one. That external battery is what gives it a maximum range of 28 miles, and it’s really useful if your commute is long. And if you don’t need the extra battery power, you can just disconnect and remove the external one and simply rely on the internal battery for your journey. You also have the option to download the Ninebot App on your smartphone and connect your ES4 to it, which will allow you to keep an eye on essential stats and also you will be able to perform firmware upgrades through it.
Ninebot Segway ES4 features airless puncture-free hard tires. The front tire is 8” and the back one is 7.5”. They both have brakes, the rear one has a mechanical brake, while the front has an electric brake located on the handlebar. Being able to brake with both tires, gives an impression of better overall stability. The ES4 wasn’t built for grass, gravel or sand, and it really shows. The grip is not great on any other surface other than city pavements. Bumpier roads can be a bit rough on this scooter, and the shock absorption could have been designed better on this model.
The ES4 folds up quickly and easily so you can carry it around, although the scooter is not the lightest out there, weighing at 31 lbs/14 kg, which can be quite challenging to hold for extended periods of time, especially on a crowded underground/subway.
Highlights & Why We Like it
If you are looking for a reliable brand and an electric scooter with a great range, then Ninebot Segway ES4 is a no-brainer. We love it because if you have to commute to work, with substantial mileage to get there, this scooter is definitely the way to go. The long range makes it a lot more powerful compared to a typical “last mile” e-scooter. The highlight here is without a doubt, the external battery, which will enable you to have twice the juice a regular scooter would. I would definitely recommend Ninebot Segway ES4 to anyone who has a daily city commute greater than 8 miles as this long-range, dual battery super-scooter will absolutely not disappoint.
Speedway Mini 4 Pro
The Mini 4 Pro is an electric scooter from Speedway/Minimotors which has amazing performance packed into a small and fairly lightweight package. The scooter features two amazing headlights, that cast a beam of up to 25 feet in front of you. This is really going to make you feel so much safer and put your mind at rest when riding in the evening. The scooter also has a brake light, and two brake systems – a regenerative electric one and a drum-brake, which will give you a lot of comfort knowing that if you have to slow down fast in an emergency, you can.
The scooter has a standard charge time of around 6 hours, which is okay considering the range capabilities of this model. The two previously mentioned headlights are mounted low on the foot pad, which is really great and unseen on other e-scooters. This low position means that when you ride at night, you won’t accidentally blind any passersby or drivers and this is a really cool feature Minimotors have thought of. This model also features a smart dashboard, which displays current speed, distance, remaining battery life, ride mode and more. The different speed modes allow you to choose suitable speed limitations for both beginners and advanced riders.
Mini 4 Pro has an 8” air-filled tire at the front, but the back one is 8” solid rubber. However, it does have rear wheel suspension, which helps a lot in reducing impact from uneven surfaces when riding. We tested the scooter and it handles potholes and bumps in the road very well. The scooter also has front wheel shock absorption, which increases comfort overall. The Mini 4 Pro also rides really well on various terrains, and tackles hills really well.
Unusually, when compared to most other e-scooters available on the market, the Mini 4 Pro has highly water resistant body and motors, which will really put your mind at rest if you get caught in the rain on your regular work commute. While the scooter folds up fairly easily, it isn’t the lightest make and model to carry around. Therefore, I would not recommend taking it on crowded public transport with you, as its high range is perfect for commuters who have quite a distance to go, and taking it up and down escalators, could prove to be quite tricky.
Highlights & Why We Like it
I would recommend the Mini 4 Pro to anyone looking for more than just a “last mile” solution. We like it because it features a great above average range capacity and awesome speed. With this e-scooter you really get what you pay for and if you intend to ride for long distances every day I would really suggest you go ahead and invest in one of these gadgets. If you are going to use this scooter extensively, then Speedway Mini 4 Pro will not let you down.
Mercane Widewheel
Widewheel is created by Mercane, a Korean manufacturer. The Widewheel scooter comes in two different versions – one with single 500W motor, with 8.8 Aw battery pack (which gives you the average of 20 miles range and a top speed of about 15 mph), and a more powerful model with dual motors at a 1000W total and a 13.2 Aw battery pack, giving it a top range of over 30 miles!
As its name would suggest, wheels are what sets this scooter apart from all the others. They are 4” wide, which gives the scooter amazing stability, not only while riding, but it doesn’t even need a kickstand in order to stand upright by itself. The tires are solid, covered in rubber and filled with soft polyurethane foam, which is supposed to provide greater absorption of bumps in the road. Widewheel is also equipped with dual suspension, and it is surprisingly comfortable to ride for a solid tire scooter. Bearing all that in mind, the scooter is really not designed to withstand any extended riding on more demanding surfaces, such as grass, gravel roads or sand.
Widewheel features an LED display which pretty much only indicates the remaining battery life. It does not show details such as speed, distance or mode. It also has LED headlights and a brake light, which will enable you to ride safely at night. The scooter features a single cable-controlled mechanical disc brake in the rear. When activated, braking actually feels strong and firm and performs really well during last-minute full speed braking.
Unfortunately, the folding mechanism is one thing that completely lets down this scooter. It’s very weird and overly complicated. To fold or unfold the handlebar you need to turn a dial located on the side to unscrew and loosen the lock, and then turn it again in order to tighten it back once you’ve placed the handlebar into the desired position. The supposed advantage of this folding system is that it fits nice and tight without shaking and rattling while riding, but with so many other scooters on the market with a much more elegant solution to this problem, I just could not grow to like the way it folds. However, this is really a matter of personal preference and I would not let it put you off from buying this otherwise great scooter. In addition, it’s quite heavy and not ideal for carrying around public transport.
Highlights & Why We Like it
Overall, Widewheel is a robust, easy to ride, nicely designed electric scooter. If you are looking for more stability in your daily commute I would definitely recommend you look into getting this model as with its unique wheel design it will soften those uneven city pavement surfaces. The thing we absolutely love about this scooter is the way it feels to ride because of its super-sized tires. You almost feel like floating over the pavement and you won’t even notice smaller obstacles and imperfections. It’s a great quality, extra comfortable commuter e-scooter and if you decide to buy it, Mercane Widewheel will not disappoint.
Xiaomi M365 Mijia
This is a worldwide best-seller, and for a very good reason – it has a simple and beautiful design, a good range and it’s easy to handle while commuting. Xiaomi M365 provides really good comfort with standard 8.5” air-filled tires. The scooter is really great at absorbing small bumps in the road. I use it on my daily commute to work on bumpy and uneven London roads and pavements, and this one’s a winner. In addition, it performs very well uphill, but the higher the rider weight the more it will struggle with hills and you might need to give it a bit of help with a few kicks whilst climbing.
You can download a smart app for your M365 which will allow you to monitor trip stats, such as speed, distance and time as well as battery health and charge status. As the scooter does not feature an LED screen display, you might decide to use your phone as a display while riding, in which case I would recommend you invest in a good quality phone holder. The battery charges from drained to fully charged in 5.5 hours, which is pretty standard for the majority of make and models. However, it is advisable not to allow your battery to fully drain every time before charging as it’s better for it to be topped up as and when you use it.
The scooter has a headlight and a stop/brake light, which are both really useful when riding at night. I use mine regularly in the evening when returning home from work and I have always felt safe and visible to other road users. The folding mechanism is super-easy to use and the scooter is going to be ready for you to pick up and carry in less than 5 seconds. If you plan on taking it with you on public transport, it is fairly light at 27 lbs/12 kg, but if you plan to commute during rush hour, it is a little bulky for those narrow London underground tube trains.
Highlights & Why We Like it
Xiaomi M365 Mijia is really a blast to ride – it’s an excellent bus or car replacement for people who live in the city and who have a low to medium range commute to work. This scooter will not let you down if you plan to use it on a daily basis as the speed is appropriate for busy city roads and pavements. This was the first electric scooter I bought and I absolutely love it, due to how fun it made my every day commute to work. It is a very reliable make and because it is a best-seller there are plenty of accessories and spare parts you can easily get in order to enhance your daily riding experience.
Xiaomi M365 Pro
Xiaomi M365 Pro is an upgraded version of the Xiaomi M365 Mijia, the world’s most popular entry level electric scooter. Though it looks nearly identical to the original, the Pro is slightly larger and now has a bright LED information display built in. The scooter has a much better range compared to M365 Mijia, allowing it to reach almost 28 miles. The display will enable you to keep an eye on current speed, remaining battery life, mode, lights and Bluetooth connection status. Much of the original M365 design such as accelerator, tires, brakes, and folding mechanism remain the same.
As the air-filled tires did not change since the original, the Pro makes for as comfortable a ride as the Mijia. The scooter has 3 riding modes which limit top speed: Eco (up to 9 mph), Standard (up to 12 mph) and Sport (up to its maximum of 16 mph). Just like the original, the Pro features a handlebar mounted front LED headlight and rear taillight. The rear taillight activates when you brake. Both make nighttime riding safe and worry-free. As previously mentioned, while the folding mechanism remains the same, the weight of the scooter has slightly increased, but this is such a minor increase that for most users it would not make for a noticeable difference.
Highlights & Why We Like it
Xiaomi M365 Pro is a great scooter and a welcomed improvement on the original. The slightly larger frame makes for an overall more comfortable riding experience. The increased battery capacity extends the range greatly. The upgraded motor improves hill climbing and is more suitable for heavier riders. But, if you already own a Xiaomi M365 Mijia, should you spend more money and upgrade to the Pro? Well, if you need the extra range capacity or you want a slightly faster electric scooter, then it’s definitely worth getting the new version. However, if you’re satisfied with the M365 Mijia, then the modest improvements Xiaomi have made, are not really worth it.
In Conclusion
Whichever electric scooter you decide to go for, the Top 10 Folding Electric Scooters for Adults we’ve reviewed all have their own unique advantages. What I would suggest is to start with assessing the kind of daily commute you have (including looking at the quality of roads and pavements) so then you can concentrate on looking at particulars about each folding electric scooter individually and ultimately decide which one would best suit your needs.
