Have you recently decided that you would like to buy an electric scooter but you’re not sure where to start your search? After all, how much is an electric scooter and what should you actually spend on one? There are many scooters with different price tags so it can be difficult and overwhelming to choose the right one. I want to make it easier for you with this post, which is why I broke it down by price to four types of electric scooters you will come across on your search. I will also give you an example of an electric scooter for each type, so that you can get a clearer idea of the kind of specs you’d be paying for. This should then help you narrow down your options and find just the right electric scooter for your needs.
1. Low Range Scooters ($100 – $300)
When I first started researching and looking into electric scooters I assumed it would be very difficult or near impossible to find one below $300 (approx. £240). I was soon proven wrong, as if this is your budget, you will actually be able to find a very good electric scooter.
GXL COMMUTER SCOOTER – $248 (£199)
This scooter really is a definition of a last mile commuter scooter. It has all the features you would expect to make your daily commute enjoyable and comfortable such as air-filled tires, an easy folding mechanism and a fairly lightweight so that you can carry it around without a struggle if necessary. This is really remarkable considering the price tag attached to this electric scooter. What you are compromising on here mainly is the range and speed. It can reach a maximum speed of 15.5 mph and it has a range of 9-12 miles per charge.
Like with any scooter, if you are constantly using it at its maximum speed, the battery will deplete quicker thus reducing the maximum range the scooter can deliver. The range is also dependent on factors such as rider weight and terrain – if your commute is hilly you can expect that range and battery life to be shorter. Having said all that, GXL Commuter Scooter is one of the best options you can get out there if your budget is in this bracket. This scooter really delivers a lovely ride and you will be pleasantly surprised how much you can get out of it.
2. Mid Range Scooters ($300 – $500)
This is a category where you will be able to browse many makes and models as they can all provide a similar range, speed and battery life, so it really comes down to finding the electric scooter that has all the things you require for your specific needs. You can get a really great quality electric scooter in this range and you could use it for either daily commuting or for adventurous days out and sightseeing.
Xiaomi M365 – $376 (£301)
There is a reason Xiaomi M365 ended up being the best-selling electric scooter. It has specs that would suit most people, at an affordable price. It sports a lovely neat design, and it’s very convenient for daily commuting to work. While it’s speed can reach a maximum of 15.5 mph – much like the GXL Commuter Scooter, the range is considerably longer at 18.5 miles. This means that you could potentially use Xiaomi M365 for more than just a last mile commute. It’s a hugely popular model and there are a lot of accessories and spare parts out there that you can get for this scooter, so your mind can be at rest that if you need a spare tire, or to replace your headlight, you will be able to locate these quite efficiently. If you decide to purchase a mid range electric scooter you can rest assured that for the money you pay you will have a pretty awesome gadget to commute and ride on.
3. High End Scooters ($500 – $1000)
Now, you should definitely expect to get something extra for your money in this category of electric scooters. They should offer a longer range, better battery life and even be able to reach some impressive speeds compared to cheaper models. There is really a large variety you could be looking at here that offers different specs, but in order to help narrow down your search, you should always consider first and foremost what will the primary use be for your electric scooter.
Ninebot KickScooter by Segway ES4 – $799.99 (£640)
This is an electric scooter that is definitely worth it’s higher price tag as it will provide you with some amazing specs. Aside from its sleek design, Ninebot Segway ES4 has an impressive 28-mile range. This is really significant as it means you can cover some serious mileage with this scooter. It also has a top speed of 19 mph and as an absolute star feature of this model, it has an external battery which you can attach to the scooter in order to allow you to reach that maximum range of 28 miles – this is a real perk as if you have a longer commute ahead of you, the two fully charged batteries (internal and external one) can put your mind at rest and get you to your destination carefree.
4. Super High End ($1000+)
This category will definitely blow your mind, as it has some of the fastest and craziest electric scooters around. They tend to be fully equipped for off-roading, with amazingly thick tires for all types of terrain. I would say they are definitely aimed at someone who wants to explore and have fun extreme rides on it. I would not necessarily recommend these models for a daily commute scooter as their design, weight and speed particularly, are not suited for your typical busy city road/sidewalk. However, I have seen people using these high speed models in London, so really if you wanted to use it for commuting as well as some extreme nature riding, it would definitely cover your needs for both.
Wolf Warrior 11+
This absolute beast of a scooter will take your breath away as it will provide you with the highest speeds an electric scooter can deliver out there. It can reach a whopping maximum speed of 50 mph. Now, I assume you would need to be fairly well protected and have experience riding a scooter at these speeds otherwise it could go terribly wrong. However, it is really exciting that you have the potential to race on your electric scooter at these insane speeds. The Wolf Warrior 11+ also has an impressive range of 90 miles. This is astonishing and it means you could take it out to the countryside or somewhere with trail tracks where you can have days of fun without having to worry about running out of battery charge. This kind of electric scooter really comes with its perks, and it is perfect for riding on dirt roads and different terrains and you could go out exploring different landscapes with it.
Ultimately What’s the Right Price?
Ultimately, it really does depend on you what the right price is, and it has to be right and work for you. There is no one right answer for everyone, considering that you are likely to need the scooter for different things and a different commute compared to another individual. One thing you can expect is the more money you pay, the more range/battery life and speed the electric scooter should have.
There are finer details to look at such as the overall design, brakes, head and tail lights, charging time, tires, etc. and a lot of models will have slightly similar or different specs, but fundamentally the price really relates to range and speed variations in electric scooters. I would say, consider what you need and want to use the scooter for, then decide on the budget you would be willing to spend and look at the makes and modes available in that particular range, then make your decision and purchase your ideal electric scooter.
